So you want a career in a corporation

Depending on what type of position you aspire to within an organisation should be an influencing factor. If the position of you choice is in production, distribution and finance you usually have a greater number of choices however if it is in sales, marketing, education etc then an industry that you feel comfortable in with regards to products, services and image will usually produce the best results for you.

Again we are trying to marry you talents and attitude to a position where you can make the greatest contribution.

Eg

Creative people can often contribute most in areas such as advertising, education, cosmetics, hairdressing , IT , marketing etc

Introverted people usually feel more comfortable in positions where you don’t have to deal with the public on a daily basis eg back office, accounting, IT, production, warehousing etc

Extraverted people can easily handle  interaction with the public and can feel comfortable in selling ( both retail and wholesale) promotional activities and where they are not desk bound.

When it is your career think long and think hard about your choices because you could be in that field for a long time. People who don’t like what they are doing rarely progress within that organisation. If going to work is a drag then it will reflect in your performance. Don’t stay where you cant make a contribution because there usually is another position with which you will feel compatible and able to contribute.

Corporations need personally motivated people that have a desire to perform at a high level and are task orientated. In my case I had no stated desire to rise through the ranks to achieve a position but was so driven to improve my own  performance and  that of my team that it became necessary sometimes to replace those above me who were hindering progress.

My first competition was to reorganise the warehouse I was in because it had a badly functioning layout, then it was me versus other sales people, then our branch versus other branches followed by our division versus other divisions always striving to perform better through analysis, goal setting, team building and self criticism.

The number of people who really want to achieve ( many talk about it ) is very small and good corporations are always on lookout for these people as they can easily be lost to creating their own business or competitors.

The way to the top is not that hard or I would not have made it in a company (German) where education was so important and I had left school at 16 years of age.
